The GS850G dug a hole in my parking space and I put the Buell up for sale!
I did a small teardown of the GS. I found a fuel filter that looks pretty orange-brown and the liquid inside it is clear. The carbs leak a little from the intake side, so they may also be flooded.
One of the previous owners replaced the air filter with a dish rag...k...
Engine starts but puffs white-ish smoke. It’s not getting enough fuel or the fuel it’s getting is crap.
I’m with Madame DeLorean tonight, but when I return tomorrow I’ll replace the filter, drain the bowls, then see what comes out. Hopefully it just choked on some water. If not, I looked up cleaning the carbs and it doesn’t look too hard.
Once I get it running reliably I’m going to paint the tank and panels. I’m going for white with a pink racing stripe.
Meanwhile, I put the Buell up for sale. After riding the GS, the Buell just isn’t fun anymore. It’s so slow, small, and uncomfortable. So screw it, let’s commit to this vintage craziness!
Like with my last bikes, sale price is what I paid for it back in May ($1200).
Following the recommendations of our resident motorcycle prof, I decided to upgrade the carb boot and the gear lever. Interestingly enough, the previous owner had already installed a custom boot and the gear lever has a nice and thick washer on it. Neat!
Replacements for the Buell are all runners and they are a Goldwing...

Is it bad that I almost like motorcycles more than smarts?

The bad is that the motorcycles probably have more power and displacement than the Smarts.

I know! <3 I’m going for that XS750 today. A bike that good looking for only $1k and the owner says it runs and rides just fine, oh heck yeah.
The bigger problem is getting home from Madame DeLorean’s apartment (near the Loop). I tried to do a top speed run on the Buell while getting here. I may have hit the advertised top speed, however there is now cord showing on my rear tire. Apparently these thumpers eat their tyres while at full chat...went from having some tread to bald to cords in only 60 really hard-ridden miles. :O

Too bad you’re so far away (and I don’t have money to spend), because I’ve really been wanting to build a bobber around a Blast motor lately and your’s is the cheapest one I’ve seen yet.
If you do look at the XS750 make sure to ride it, it’s very common for these to take out 2nd gear.

I just found out that the XS is a four hour (one way) drive away. As much as I adore that bike, I’m not about to do an 8 hour drive on a workday. :(
As for the Blast, the back tyre was awful and second gear was on its way out and due for troubleshooting . I may have undercut the other bikes, but the new owner may run into a nasty surprise...or they may just adjust the clutch lever and it turns out to be a great bike for them.
Also, I really haven’t seen Blasts sell for the price their owners are wanting. I’ve been seeing the same $1,500-$2,000 Blasts for sale on Craigslist since...well since I bought mine back in May. These bikes just aren’t that popular and only seem to be somewhat desired by very new riders and cafe/bobber builders.

All I really need from a Blast would be the engine anyway, so when it comes time to actually build one I’ll probably just look for an engine vs trying to part one out.

Ah, good idea! I do see a few non-runners pop up on CL from time to time.
Meanwhile, I think I’ve found the Blast’s replacement...A GL 1100
